5 destinations to consider for an eco-friendly vacation

Date:

For a while now, sustainable or green travel has been popular. Such eco-friendly vacations aim to have a minimal negative impact on the environment. Here, travelers make choices that aim to protect the environment, address climate change, and minimize the use of plastic. On such trips, travelers also aim to honor local customs and avoid harming or disrespecting the local community. Those interested in such vacations can choose from many eco-friendly destinations in the country.

1. California

While it is mostly known for its bustling cities in the south, California also has destinations that support sustainable tourism. For instance, one of the most iconic travel destinations, located in the mountains of California, is the Yosemite National Park. Every year, thousands of visitors flock to the region. Spread over 1,200 square miles, the park has several stunning features—from grand sequoia trees and rock faces to waterfalls, meadowlands, and much more. With a substantial number of annual visitors, Yosemite has taken numerous measures to safeguard the natural ecology of the park. For starters, it has tried to lower the impact of tourism on the environment, asking visitors to be mindful of the animals and their natural habitat within the park. Along with this, within the region, visitors are expected to avoid littering the place and discarding single-use plastics and other non-sustainable materials. Additionally, the park limits the use of vehicles for exploring the park.

2. Maine

With its diverse range of natural landscapes, Maine is one of the top eco-friendly destinations in the country. It has rugged coastlines as well as thick, dense forests. It is known among tourists for its dedication to protecting the natural ecology of the region. Among the several tourist spots in the state, the Acadia National Park is the one most visited by tourists. Here, tourists can take up tide pooling, hiking, and bird watching. Visitors can also explore the lush forested interiors of the park along with a stunning coast along the borders. Another notable spot is Baxter State Park, which is the northernmost point of the Appalachian Trail and is home to Mount Katahdin. Additionally, the Allagash Wilderness Waterway might be the right option for those interested in canoeing and kayaking. Alternatively, Moosehead Lake can be the perfect location for wildlife watching and fishing. Each of these places prioritizes the conservation of nature and sustainability.

3. Gulf Shores

Located along the coast of Alabama, the city of Gulf Shores is mostly popular for its white-sand state park. That said, what makes this place an eco-friendly vacation spot is the presence of a sustainable hotel in the region. The Lodge at Gulf State Park is among the most eco-friendly accommodations for green travelers. The hotel construction follows sustainable principles to meet the guidelines of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (or LEED) standards—a rating system for measuring the energy efficiency, environmental impact, and sustainability of a structure. The lodge is located along the white sands inside the park, providing guests with direct access to over 28 miles of trails for biking and hiking. Along with this, tourists can visit the nature center and participate in interactive outdoor classes and nature walks. A notable feature for eco-travelers is that the city of Gulf Shores itself promotes sustainable tourism by issuing multiple ordinances to protect the natural wildlife of the region and keep tourists from littering.

4. Hawaii

For eco-tourism and responsible travel, Hawaii has always been a popular vacation destination. Various local communities in the region have been practicing sustainable and environmentally friendly measures for years. Additionally, all the islands in Hawaii encourage tourists to support local culture, businesses, and cuisines and promote environmental education for all. When planning an eco-friendly vacation, the Hōnaunau National Historical Park is worth considering. Another option is the Hawaiian Legacy Forest, which is located at Gunstock Ranch in Kahuku, Hawaii. This place allows travelers to leave their legacy behind and make a meaningful impact on the natural ecosystem of the region instead of just visiting the travel spot, using up its resources, and never revisiting it. Here, visitors can plant their own trees, particularly new Monarch Milo trees. Along with that, guests can engage in guided expeditions, horseback riding, and cultural ceremonies.

5. Colorado

As a prime eco-tourism destination, Colorado is known for its commitment to preserving the region’s natural biodiversity and diverse landscapes. It has a lot of options for those looking to travel sustainably, and one of them is the Rocky Mountain National Park. With a wide range of wildlife and majestic mountains, this park offers visitors trails for hiking and opportunities to learn about the local ecology. Other notable spots in the region include the Mesa Verde National Park, where visitors can experience ancient history and also observe the way cultural sites and natural landscapes are preserved and sustained for future generations. The Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is another destination worth adding to the 2024 sustainable tourism plans. It has dramatic canyon landscapes, allowing visitors to participate in activities like fishing, stargazing, and hiking, all of which have a minimal impact on the natural ecology of the region.
