8 fun games for a memorable baby shower

Date:

Baby showers are a fun way to celebrate new expecting moms and the arrival of their little ones. While these parties are a blast by themselves, throwing in some baby-themed games can make them even more memorable. Some games can help break the ice between guests and elicit smiles and laughs, while others can result in the creation of souvenirs for the baby and the parents to enjoy in the years to come.

1. What’s in the dirty diaper?

It’s no shocker that parents will spend a lot of time changing dirty diapers once the baby arrives, so why not have some fun with it beforehand?

To play this game, all one needs are some clean disposable diapers, a spoon, a bowl, and a few candy bars, jams, candies, or any other sweets. The game itself is simple– smear some chocolate or candy on the diaper. Pass the diaper around one by one to let guests guess what’s in it. They can see, smell, and taste the treats, depending on their comfort level.

With the right crowd, this game is sure to create a lot of excitement and laughter.

2. Alphabet game

Skip the traditional games and opt for this alphabet activity instead. Not only will it act as a stellar icebreaker for the guests, but it will also result in a wonderful keepsake for the baby– their first-ever alphabet book!

Keep supplies like paper, pens, markers, crayons, colored pencils, and stickers ready. Before the event begins, write one letter on different sheets of paper. Once the guests arrive, hand them a sheet of paper (individually or in groups) and ask them to decorate the page with things that start with the corresponding letter (for instance, ants, apples, and airplanes for “A”). They can use stickers or get creative with personalized drawings and sketches. Remember to laminate the pages and get them bound after the shower, and the book is now ready!

3. Pregnant relay race

Try something a little more unconventional for an outdoor baby shower with this pregnant relay race. To conduct this activity, the host will have to arrange for a relay race track and some fake baby weights using a baby doll, backpack, or dumbbell. One such item will be required for every participating team.

The rules of the game are pretty simple and easy to follow. Start by splitting the guests into equal teams. The guests need to run along the relay track as they carry the fake baby (and pass it on to the next team member). The fastest team to reach the end point wins.

4. Don’t drop the baby race

If a relay race track is not practical, try this instead. It’s a fun baby-edition spin-off of the “Don’t Drop the Egg” game, that’s a kid’s party favorite.

The hosts will have to arrange an egg and spoon for each guest. Other supplies include pens and markers to decorate these eggs, some ribbon to mark the finish line, obstacles (lawn chairs, tables, etc.), and a stopwatch. Before the party, take some time to decorate the eggs to give them baby-like features (a cute button nose, hello!). Set up the obstacles and the finish line as well.

To play, ask everyone to collect at the starting point and hand them an egg and a spoon each. Once the game starts, the guests are not allowed to touch the egg at all. The goal is to get to the finish line without dropping the egg along the way. The fastest one across the line wins.

5. Toilet paper diapers

This may not sound like the most appealing idea, but it’s sure to be a hit. Moreover, it doesn’t require any prep apart from arranging for toilet paper rolls.

Divide the guests into equal groups and hand them a roll of toilet paper each. Each group needs to make the best makeshift diaper they can using this paper. Have a prize ready for the group that makes the best diaper.

6. ABC game

Those looking for an exciting sit-down game are going to love this activity. All one needs is pens, paper, game sheets, and a timer.

To prepare the game sheets, write down the alphabet on the left and print enough copies for all the guests. At the shower, the guests have a minute (or perhaps two) to write down a baby-related word for each letter (B- bottle, C – car seat, R – rattle, and so on). The person with the most responses in the limited time wins.

7. Guess the baby tune

This activity can be played for virtual as well as in-person baby showers. There are two ways to play this game. The first one is with nursery rhymes, lullabies, and baby tunes, and the other with songs that feature the word “Baby” in them.

The host will play 5-10-second snippets of each song, and the guests need to compete to guess the song’s title. The one with the most correct answers will take the prize home.

8. The price is right – baby edition

Give the guests a fun and competitive activity to estimate the cost of all the products required for the baby. Plus, this game is rather easy to host, as most parents start preparing for their baby early on. Gather some baby-related items, such as diapers, wipes, stroller, crib, bassinet, etc., and let the others guess their price. The one with the closest guesses wins.
