Online cosmetology classes – Coursework and application details

Date:

While cosmetology procedures such as haircuts, colors, styling, nail care, makeup, and skincare have always been around, these practices have now become even more popular among people of all ages. This has led to a spike in interest in the field, drawing scores of people into careers in cosmetology. Since attending a traditional beauty school can require a lot of time and money, free online cosmetology classes can be worthwhile alternatives.

Pursuing cosmetology as a career

Cosmetology is the study and application of beauty procedures on the skin, hair, and nails, generally meant to enhance one’s physical appearance. The basic duties of a cosmetologist include helping clients identify their hair and skin type, working with them to discuss customized styling solutions, caring for and maintaining their skin and hair, helping them solve any beauty issues, and offering nail care such as manicures and pedicures. This field can be rather lucrative, inviting creative minds from all walks of life. It is also considered to be fulfilling, as cosmetologists can help people experiment with their personal style.

Like most other careers, it is important to achieve finesse and technique before taking on clients. This is where cosmetology schools or classes come in. The classes can be held in person, hybrid, or online.  A course in the field should cover all of the key cosmetology practices to help participants hone their skills and master their craft. Additionally, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) outlines certain requirements for becoming a practicing cosmetologist. This includes attending a cosmetology school to undergo training and obtaining a license to practice in one’s desired state. Regulatory requirements for this field are stringent across the country, so a license is an absolute must before starting one’s practice.

Things cosmetology classes cover

Irrespective of the format, in-person or online, cosmetology classes generally offer students an overview of a few key topics.

General cosmetology

This field covers patient ethics, personal grooming, human anatomy, physiology, hygiene and sanitation, and useful tools and equipment. An introduction to these concepts can help students familiarize themselves with the subject.

Hair care

Cosmetology courses also introduce students to different types of scalps and ways to properly care for them. Students will also learn how to shampoo and condition hair and practice appropriate hair care. A considerable amount of time is also allocated to teaching students how to trim, thin, curl, and shape hair, work with hair extensions, practice styling techniques, and work on updos and wedding styles, etc.

Cosmetologists also need to know how to create highlights and lowlights, color the hair, or do root touch-ups. So, these topics are covered during the course as well.

Nail care

From performing manicures and pedicures to applying acrylic nails and creating designs with polish, cosmetology courses offer a lot of instruction and training on nail care.

Skincare

Many clients want clear, flawless skin. To help them achieve this, salons offer a range of procedures such as clean-ups, facials, and hair removal. In cosmetology classes, students learn to master these practices and advise clients according to their needs.

Makeup application

Makeup is another crucial aspect of cosmetology. Whether clients are trying to come up with a daily look or helping someone get ready for a special day, such as a wedding or a party, cosmetology courses cover all kinds of makeup applications. The training here is a combination of theoretical and practical classes. Common topics covered here include color theory, makeup application tips, applying brush makeup, and esthetics.

Salon management

Students often look forward to opening their salons or businesses after completing school. To help them prepare for this endeavor, cosmetology courses cover salon management basics.
